Galešnik Island
The Pakleni Islands got their name from “paklina,” a type of pine resin used in shipbuilding. Due to a distortion in the local dialect, the group is also called the “Pakleni otoci,” even though the name has no connection to “hell” or “pitch.” In everyday speech, the residents of Hvar also refer to the Pakleni Islands as “Škȍji.”
The navigation safety around the Pakleni Islands is regulated by several lighthouses, located at Cape Klobuk, on the islet of Veli Vodnjak, Sveti Jerolim, Pokonji Dol, and Gališnik, as well as on the reef Baba at the entrance to the ACI Marina Palmižana.
The lighthouse on Pokonji Dol, situated on the island of the same name, and the battery on Gališnik, constructed at the entrance to the port of Hvar by the Austrians in 1836 after the French withdrawal from the Illyrian Provinces, contribute to maritime safety in the region.
